Mushtaq Ahmed

A World Cup winner for Pakistan in 1992, Mushtaq Ahmed became Pakistan’s main spin bowler in the 1990s taking 185 wickets in 52 Tests with his leg-breaks and googlies.

A fizzy personality, he based his approach on that of his hero Abdul Qadir, the mercurial wrist-spinner whom Mushy succeeded in the Pakistan team. He also played for Somerset and Sussex being instrumental in the latter’s success at twice winning the County Championship.

Persistent knee problems forced him to retire in 2007 whereupon he as picked up by the England and Wales Cricket Board to be England’s spin coach, a role continues to ply with other teams around the world.
